Los Cristianos is a coastal city located in the South of the island of Tenerife. Its climate and strategic position have contributed to its evolution as a touristic area on the island. Why has this place become so successful?

The unique history of Los Cristianos:

Everything started in the 19th century when this area was just a really small fisherman village with a small port and a few wooden houses. From then on, the industrialization era lead to the development of Los Cristianos and its harbour which became an important center of import-export and commerce. At the beginning of the 20th century the water was brought from Vilaflor to the city and agriculture became an important source of income for the region (most of all tomatoes and banana plantations) and the population kept increasing. Strategic importance of the port gave the city an opportunity to expand at the same time its maritime activity. In addition to the transport of goods, some routes were created for the passengers transportation from Tenerife to La Gomera.

During the second half of 20th century the agricultural and commercial economy started to switch to another type of income: tourism.

Why tourism developed so well in Los Cristianos?

The first tourists arrived from Scandinavia. These people who lived in cold climate were glad to find the sunny and warm weather of Los Cristianos. Indeed, the south of Tenerife offers good conditions all year long and it is why Tenerife is known as the «island of eternal spring». Throughout the years, many more people discovered the advantages of the area and as a consequence at short distance from Los Cristianos the airport of Reina Sofia was built to make it easy to reach the city. The development of tourism lead to the construction of many attractions such as theme parks, commercial malls, hotels, beaches… in order to turn the city into an entertaining place for tourists. Nowadays, tourism is the main source of income of Tenerife.

Tourists and local people coexist in a special atmosphere:

Even though Los Cristianos is a place that attracts many visitors, the population consists mainly of local people. This is why you can enjoy the city in various ways. The center near the port has typical Canary architecture and you can go shopping and get lost in the small streets full of nice cafes and restaurants serving Canarian food. Moreover, many interesting places are easily reachable from Los Cristianos. The main site to visit in Tenerife is the volcano El Teide that is reachable within 45 minutes by car by the road from Los Cristianos to the National Park. Also, many parks such as Siam Park, Jungle Park, Monkey Park and Aqualand are very close to the area. You could even get to visit other islands by traveling with a ferry that heads from the port of Los Cristianos to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.
